Smith, aware that Dennis had a 1969 Pontiac Firebird through a mutual acquaintance, stabbed Dennis to death, leaving the knife in his neck, before fleeing with the car and a computer. He later returned to the house and set it on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence. Firefighters arrived and discovered Dennis’ body, burnt beyond recognition, inside. Dennis was identified using dental records.
